Larou Mixson

This is a picture of Larou gathering eggs in his chicken house. He patented his method of recording the number of eggs each chicken laid. There were two rows of cages, about five to six feet off the ground, the hens went into a night. Every day he would walk between the rows of cages and when a chicken stopped laying eggs he removed that chicken, dressed it, and sold the hen to neighbors who cooked and ate them. He put up a board running on the lower front edge of the cages. He put a chart on the the board, in front of each cage that had an open calendar on it. He made a harness he hung over his shoulders with a basket hanging in the middle in front of him , This harness hung on roller that rolled on the top edge of the board in front of the cages. As he walked in front of the cages he rolled his basket, reached and picked up the eggs from each side and put them in his basket. As he reached for the egg he bumped the handle with his elbow which made a mark on the the calendar. By watching the chart he could tell when the hen quit laying eggs. You can see his patent here.

Mattie Lee & Daniel Jett Addison 1922

I have a copy of the original marriage certificate. Daddy was forty seven years old and mother was twenty years old when they were married in 1922. I suppose daddy did not want to make it look too bad so he put forty as his age on the certificate. Mother did not know this until I got a copy of the marriage certificate in 1994. She stated if she had known he put age forty on the certificate she would have kidded him about it.

Daniel Jett Addison and his parents Beverly and Margaret

On the right side of the picture is Jett Addison. The two people beside him are his parents, Beverly Watkins Addison and Margaret Rivanna Jones Addison.

Abijah Addison

On November 21 1945, my wncle, Henry Vivian Addison, wrote to Mattie Logsdon and she included the following quote in her book, MY MOTHERSHEAD FAMILY. "Jim, William and Henry Mothershead came to Alabama from South Carolina long before my grandmother, who was their sister. My grandpa, Abijah Addison, was married twice. His first wife had one child, Thomas, born in 1828. He died at 16 years of age. Grandpa then married his first cousin, Elizabeth Jett Mothershead." (Note: According to an old hand written paper I have, I think my father wrote it) Thomas Christopher Addison was born March 20, 1829 and died Oct. 1844. This same old hand written paper gives the date of marriage of Abijah Addison and Elizabeth Jett Mothershead as April 1, 1828. If these dates are correct, then Elizabeth Jett Mothershead would be the mother of Thomas Christopher Addison, born March 20, 1829. Abijah and Elizabeth Jett Addison migrated from Lancaster, South Carolina, in a covered wagon, to Lowndes (now Crenshaw) County, Alabama in 1856. They brought with them four of their daughters. The fifth daughter, Mary Jane, had been an invalid all of her life. She came by train. Their five sons were already in Alabama.

Daniel Jones House

Home of Daniel Jones, Grandpappy, at the time of his death in 1897. Rear view. Front of house had fallen in. The house had a double fireplace that heated two rooms. House was located directly behind New Ebenezer Baptist Church where he is buried, near Highland Home, AL. Picture made October 1995.

House of Henry Vivian ADDISON

I do believe this is the house Uncle Viv lived in made around 1890. I think the man in the picture was a traveling photographer.
